Bakersfield, CA – Kern County Public Health Services Department is coordinating a countywide Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) public education event on June 14, 2017. 845 Kern County residents were trained in hands-only CPR during last year’s event and we hope to surpass that number this year.

Cardiac arrests are common and can happen to anyone at any time. Over 350,000 out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrests occur annually, with 70% occurring at home. “By teaching community members hands-only CPR, victims of sudden cardiac arrest will be more likely to survive” says Dr. Kristopher Lyons M.D., EMS Medical Director. “It only takes 5 minutes to learn this simple skill that can save a life.”

Hands-only CPR (chest compressions but no mouth-to-mouth breathing) focuses on the first few minutes following a sudden cardiac arrest, since the lungs and blood contain only enough oxygen to keep vital organs healthy for a very short period of time. While emergency responders are on their way to the scene, chest compressions using hands-only CPR will provide the ongoing blood flow needed to give the patient a better chance of survival.

We invite the community to participate in the Sidewalk CPR training on June 14th and stop by one of the following training locations hosted by Kern County Public Health Services and our community partners including: Hall Ambulance, Bakersfield Heart Hospital, Dignity Health, Delano Regional Medical Center, Liberty Ambulance and Ridgecrest Regional Hospital. This list will be updated and an interactive map can be found online at
