Hands-Only CPR Training Event June 1st

Bakersfield, CA – Kern County Public Health Services Department’s Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division, in collaboration with the American Heart Association, is coordinating a free countywide Sidewalk Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) public education event on June 1, 2016.

Cardiac arrests are common and can happen to anyone at any time. Over 350,000 out-of-hospital sudden cardiac arrests occur annually, with 70% occurring at home. “By teaching community members hands-only CPR, more victims of sudden cardiac arrest will be more likely to survive” says Matt Constantine, Director of Kern County Public Health Services. “It only takes about 5 minutes to learn this simple skill that can save a life.”

Hands-only CPR (chest compressions but no mouth-to-mouth breathing) focuses on the first few minutes following a sudden cardiac arrest, since the lungs and blood contain only enough oxygen to keep vital organs healthy for that amount of time. While emergency responders are on their way to the scene, chest compressions using hands-only CPR will provide the ongoing blood flow needed to give the patient a much better chance of survival once responders arrive.

Last year 1,224 Kern County residents were trained in Sidewalk CPR and we hope to surpass that number this year. The first week of June is designated as National CPR Week and provides a perfect opportunity for public education on this vital skill. More information can be found at www.kernpublichealth.com or www.handsonlycpr.org/

We invite the community to participate in the Sidewalk CPR training on June 1st and stop by one of the following training locations hosted by our community partners including: Kern County Fire Department, Bakersfield Fire Department, Hall Ambulance, Kern Medical, Liberty Ambulance, Bakersfield Heart Hospital, Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, Delano Regional Medical Center, Ridgecrest Regional Hospital, and San Joaquin Community Hospital. This list will be updated and can be found online at www.kernpublichealth.com.
