PROCEDURE FOR DISINFECTION OF STREETS
AFTER SEWAGE SPILLS

 

The following methods for cleanup and disinfection of streets, driveways, etc., after sewage spills or overflows are recommended by the Kern County Environmental Health Division.

 

METHOD A
(PREFERRED)

1. If sewage is containable, use a Kern County Environmental Health Division-licensed sewage pumping truck to remove it and take it to a disposal facility.  Protect against sewage running into storm drains.

2. Rake up, sweep up, and shovel up all fecal matter and associated debris.  Remove to sewage treatment plant.

3. Using a solution of household chlorine bleach, such as Clorox or Purex, spray down the affected area.  Let disinfectant remain in place for at least one-half hour.  Recommended dosage of chlorine bleach is 1 cup (8 oz.) to 1 1/2 cups (12 oz.) of liquid bleach per 100 gallons of water.  This will yield a dosage of approximately 30 to 45 ppm.

4. Wash down the area.

5. Disinfect any tools used with the chlorine disinfectant solution.

 

METHOD B

1.      If sewage is containable, use a Kern County Environmental Health Division-licensed sewage pumping truck to remove it and take it to a disposal facility.  Protect against sewage running into storm drains.

2. Rake up, sweep up, and shovel up all fecal matter and associated debris.  Remove to sewage treatment plant.

3. Broadcast powdered lime into the affected area.

4. When area has dried, sweep it up and wash it down.

5. Disinfect any tools used with a chlorine disinfectant solution (30 to 45 ppm as above).
